Holocaust Memory And Jewish Identity: Reflections On An Israeli Sinologist

Authors

Abstract

One of the founders of Sinology in Israel, Irene Eber has left her fingerprints on almost all of aspects of Sino-Judaic cross-cultural communication.  Some of her conclusions are unmistakably her own and pronouncedly different from those of other scholars, which merit more attention in Chinese academic circle.  Meanwhile, she is a Holocaust survivor, and her traumatic experience as a hidden child in wartime Poland was narrated in her memoir The Choice.  This remarkable book, with an undeniable authority on the plight of Children in the occupied lands during the Holocaust, not only evinces a nexus of the Holocaust memory and the Jewish identity, but also provides a key to perceive her academic orientation and to understand her academic choices.
